Questions And Answers On Free File Hosting Script Site

Davina asks…

Problem with images on free web site?

I’ve had this web site for over 10 years, and took it ofline because I was unable to afford it any more. I found a free site space to upload some of it. The site host is atwebpages.com. I had to install a new ftp client to upload with, I got FileZilla.

Everything seems to be uploaded ok. But the images don’t show up! They show fine when i view the files from my hard drive, but not on the online site.

I submitted a help ticket and got a quick response, but apparently they can see th images, and in fact sent me a screenshot to prove it.

I tried to view the images on both IE and Firefox, with no luck.

When I click to view an image I get this message:

“Error 500: Script Execution Failure
Description: The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.”

The site url is http://rainbow-magic.atwebpages.com/

Does anyone has any idea what to do about this ?
Okay, figured it out, it was a firewall issue, resolved now.

Nothing personal and please pardon the pun, but your site is frightfully outdated. You won’t get any search engine attention with your setup, not to mention the security holes that exist. If you are on a budget, you can still use the world’s number one, free, open source, web development system hosted on a free web host and have not only a search engine friendly site but also most importantly, security. It’s called Joomla.

Why is security important? Well, once upon a time, hackers would simply knock your site offline or put up obscene messages. Today, hackers use their victim’s websites to commit financial devastating crimes that initially get pinned on guess who? You – the webmaster. These crimes carry not only fines but even jail time because of their international implications.

Bottom line, don’t put a website up on the internet with 10-year-old technology.

There are free Joomla user groups in every major city with plenty of friendly people with the same needs as you. You can get the names of reliable, free, Joomla-friendly web hosts from these groups. The host should have a Joomla installer such as Fantastico. A premium web host with top security and up time like Host Gator is only $4 a month. But if you can’t afford it, then there are free hosts available. There is a backup/restore component called Akeeba that allows you to store a copy of your Joomla site on your PC if you ever need to take it down or switch web hosts.
Try it, you might like it. :)

Alana asks…

Why is the navbar in my hosted website not updating? Using iWeb 09 on a free server?

Hello, i’m using iWeb 09 and I’ve continuously published the site, even published all the site changes and from what I can see on the iWeb Application, in the navbar it says “About Us” and not “About”. I have two different pages, but have decided to remove the “About” page and simply leave “About Us” in the navbar. Now, I’m also uploading every single file it seems onto the server and it’s not changing. Does anybody know what files exactly are associated with the navbar. I know in Scripts -> Widgets -> and then navbar.js. What else would be associated? I tried uploading home.html in the Home_files folder and even index.html on the root file system.

I would be skeptical of any free site hosting. If it’s just free image hosting like these sites, then i think it’s legit:

http://photobucket.com

http://freefilesaver.com

http://flickr.com

otherwise, if it’s free hosting, with free databases and other resource-intensive add-ons, then i wouldn’t trust the site. They probably have a lot of small print. There is no way that a legitimate site would offer this much stuff for free. Image hosting is something else. And, normally, with the free site companies, they put ads on your pages. You’re better off paying for your own host.
