The Prince’s Trustcelebrates 35 years of making a difference to people’s lives this week. Janet Tansley speaks to three Merseysiders who owe everything to the charity
WITH his duty with the Royal Navy completed, Prince Charles needed a new mission in life.
And so, in 1976 His Royal Highness founded The Prince’s Trust.
It was dedicated to improving the lives of young people across the UK and has continued to deliver on that commitment.
What began with 21 pilot projects, including grants given to a 19-year old woman to run a social centre for the Haggerston Housing Estate in east London, and for two ex-offenders to run a fishing club, mushroomed into a massive charity which has become part of the country’s fabric.

Says a spokesman for The Trust: “Around one-in-five young people in the UK are not in work, education or training. Youth unemployment costs the UK economy £10m a day in lost productivity, while youth crime costs £1bn every year.
“We address this by giving practical and financial assistance to the young people who need it most. We aid develop key skills, confidence and motivation, enabling young people to move into work, education or training.”
He adds: “We run programmes that encourage young people to take responsibility for themselves – helping them build the life
